Music, health, and Somatofulness

Music and its own vibrational quality have been used as a healing force for centuries.

The universe is humming with vibrational energy. The sound of the big bang was extrapolated from analysis of the cosmic microwave background radiation and resembles an other-worldly sound arc beyond anyone’s imagination. The planets of the solar system have a musical quality of their own as well; each one unique due to the sound waves produced on each planet and the individual atmospheres the waves travel through. Space is a symphony!

Our natural world is musical as well. The Earth, like her planetary neighbors, emits a hum via the seismic motions of the ocean floor, creating a drone-like presence. Atop this tonic note are the sounds of nature, from animal calls to birdsong, waterfalls, mindscapes, rustling leaves, and the chirps of insects.

Finally, we ourselves produce vibrational energy, that offers a symphony of life. Sonocytology, or the study of cellular sounds, is a field of inquiry that has taken the sound vibrations of metabolic movements and activities of human cells and has magnified them for the ear to hear. Each cell type makes its own sound. The many varieties of cells in our bodies then, create a complexity of different musical voices, all singing at once. Taken together, our cellular songs, the music of nature, the hum of the planet, the atmospheric voices from the planets of the solar system, and the residual drone of the big bang mean we are all awash in vibrational energy.

Somatofulness is an attunement with the body and release of the barriers that suffocate one’s natural life energy.

Music and its own vibrational quality have been used as a healing force for centuries. Historical records indicate that music was used for therapeutic use in ancient Greece, Egypt, China, and India. The practice of somatofulness necessarily includes music, in which the vibrational energy of musical sounds complements and supports the vibrational quality of life and the universe. Somatofulness is an attunement with the body and release of the barriers that suffocate one’s natural life energy. Living the essence of one’s internal energy is living in a space of psychological freedom, joy, vitality, and play. Engaging with music both liberates blocked energy and supports the notion of play and the feeling of a flow state.
